20th OF APRIL 2018 : THERE WAS ONCE NAPOLEON III, EMPEROR OF THE FRENCH.

« Let us help our neighbour

For humanity and honour.

Defending our ideals :

Glory to the Emperor ! »

YESTERDAY

On the 20th of April 1808, His Imperial Highness Louis-Napoleon was born to Hortense Bonaparte (née Hortense de Beauharnais), queen of Holland, and Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, king of Holland and younger brother of the Emperor Napoleon the Great. The little prince was born as the Empire reached its highest point, and was only seven years old when the restoration of the monarchy in France banished his family. His character was therefore forged by hard times, and his ideas by the knowledge of the works of his uncle and by contact with different peoples. During his exile in Switzerland, Germany, Scotland, England and the United States, he saw the suffering of the working classes and searched for the means to improve their conditions. For the Napoleonic Idea is “social, commercial, industrious and humanitarian”[1]. As a true prophet of his political faith, he reminded his readers and his hearers that the first duty of states and citizens is to work for the good of all [2]. As pretender to the crown of his uncle since the death of his cousin Napoleon II in 1832, he showed himself to be a great writer, with works including “Extinguishing Poverty” (1844), “The question of Sugar” (1842), and “Napoleonic Ideas” (1839). Prisoner in the fort of Ham for six years (1840 – 1846), he embodied the suffering of the peoples as his uncle had embodied their glory, according to the famous feminist George Sand [3].

When his election, first as a member of parliament, then as President of the Republic, later as Emperor of the French, placed him on the great wave of universal suffrage, the people showed by their votes the extent to which they accorded their love and confidence to this man who carried their hopes to the same degree to which the members of parliament of 1850 and 1851 had betrayed them by abolishing universal suffrage. When the third Napoleon created workers lodgings, organised soup kitchens, retirement pensions, free legal assistance and accident insurance for the poor, he demonstrated the size of the gap separating Bonapartism from the dismal, absurd and reactionary theories created by party ideologies.

TODAY

On the 20th of April 2018, on the occasion of the 210th anniversary of the day which saw the birth of Napoleon III, the Bonapartists pay hommage to he who was the first president of the Republic from 1848 to 1852, and emperor of the French from 1852 to 1873. We invite all those who want, as we do, the honour of France to be respected, and the happiness of humanity, to take part in our ULM project, the Union of those who Combat Poverty, the aim of which is none other than the re-establishment of the imperial welfare offices, by « the creation of a system of « single points of call » organised in our départements, in order not only to bring aid to the homeless and those in need, but equally to ensure that they are taken in hand by State services, associations, volunteers, and by themselves ».

ULM PROJECT, SESSION OF THE 20th OF OCTOBER 2017

TO THE 20th OF OCTOBER 2018

« [T]he Emperor :a brave man, haunted by generous dreams, incapable of a cruel deed, very sincere in the unshakable conviction that carries him through the events of his life which is that of a man predestined, with an absolutely and unavoidable determined mission. All of his strength comes from there, from this sense of the duties that fall to him ». Émile Zola

« [T]he Emperor can await with confidence the judgement of posterity. His reign will remain one of the most glorious in our History ». Louis Pasteur

« What makes Louis-Napoleon a man at once endearing and laudable, is not only his life’s work, as impressive as misunderstood, not only his skill and the strength of character that he showed in order to pass from exile to power, but also his faithfulness to his convictions. Every public figure, by way of a thousand little acts of successive and subtle cowardice, is exposed to the risk of forgetting the reasons and the ideals that justify his commitments. Nothing of the sort with Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte. And when sometimes, by force of circumstances, he seems to stray from the path he has set for himself, behold soon how he proceeds to (more or less) brutally correct his march, in such a manner that the moment when he appears to have lost his way is in reality the moment when he finds himself anew». Philippe Seguin.

TOMORROW

« That is why we find a precedent in the welfare administrations and the social programme and policy of Napoleon the Great and of his nephew, Napoleon III. Our counter attack against pauperism constitutes, on this anniversary of the victory of Ulm, the continuation of this policy by individuals, associations and the services of the State, and a proportional answer to the current crisis. It represents also (outside of Romania, where his successful defence of the creation of a Romanian nation state is remembered with gratitude, and in Acadia and Farnborough, where his generosity and compassion are not forgotten) the civil commemoration that was lacking to complete the religious and military honours rendered to Napoleon III, and to his son, Napoleon IV ».

Paul-Napoleon Calland
President of the Bonapartist Movement
